Updated :  09 January 2009

This page lists the SUZUKI motorcycles that I consider are the best choices from the LAMS lists of approved motorcycles.  They are not the most powerful or cheapest - simply what I think a new rider would appreciate and could grow into for longer than just 12 months. Remember that there are now lots of motorcycles to choose from!

Suzuki has targeted LAMS in a big way and has even released specific models of models.  At the start of 2009 there was a choice of 12 different models.  So as a show of support I've added this new page first!

If your motorcycle is LAMS compliant make sure you check that the engine is un-restricted or not - because there may be additional costs involved in removing the restrictions.  Manufacturers have use different methods for making a particular model LAMS compliant.  Always check with the dealer or manufacturer HQ in your area.

Most of the Australian States and Territories now have LAMS legislation - which allows new and learner motorcycle riders to legally ride motorcycles on the road that have engines larger than 250cc.  See the LAMS page for links to the various Transport authorities for more information.

Comment

The SV series of V-twins have been around for a few years.  However this version is specifically for new riders and is a de-tuned version of the regular and full power version.  It's easy to get the big bike sound from after market pipes and easy enough to upgrade to full power once the learner restrictions have expired however it may cost more because this is a specific model.  Check with a reputable dealer.

Comment

The GSXxxxF series frame has been around for over a decade in 600cc form.  In turn it's based on the 750cc version that's even older and the Bandit series which is even older still!  With the latest supersports GSXR styling clues it's hard to tell what it is at least from front on.

Like the SV series it's easy enough to convert to the full power version or modify.  However it may cost more to de-restrict because like the SV it is a specific model.  Check with a reputable dealer.

This is a dirt bike that you can ride on the road too!  A step up from the popular 250cc and 400cc dedicated but often NOT road registrable dirt bikes.

The DR650 has been around for over a decade in its current design and well proven.  Although the engine does not produce much power it is the torque figure that makes this bike durable, fun and 'powerful'. If fitted with extended range fuel tanks and a few performance mods it would challenge bikes twice the price.  EG. BMW and Honda.

Very suitable if you have long legs or taller than average.  Also consider the Kawasaki KLR alternative!

This is a traditional supermotard, a combination of dirt and road motorcycle.  This is the real thing with sports motorcycle parts like suspension and tyres all customised for you to enjoy.

The only downside of being dirt bike based is the small petrol tank!  That said if used for the intended purpose namely
