Prado Engine History
Last Updated: 09 May 2008

Since the Prado (120 series) is a relatively new model there aren't many engines available in the past or present.  I guess there will be very few in the future since the current engine are top of their class.

Past engine in the Prado include:
(I'm not sure what the engine codes are.)

4 Cyl Twin Cam 16 Valve 2.7 litres Petrol
112Kw @ 4800rpm 240Nm @ 4000rpm

V6 Quad Cam 24 Valve 3.4 litres Petrol
132Kw @ 4800rpm 303Nm @ 3600rpm

Which is the best engine ?

On specs alone the V6 is the choice !  Since the test is on the V6 I can safely say that it is the petrol version a really good engine.

I can't say much about the diesel as I haven't driven a diesel.  However based on what heard at the fleet reviews it not exactly state of the art.  Wait for the 2UZ-FE version - much better.

The V8 would be nice but there does not seem to be any real reason for choosing it over the V6 apart from personal preference.

How fast is the Prado ?

Claim for the Lexus GX V6 is 8.1 sec 0-60mph.
Claim for the Prado GXL V6 is 9.5 secs 0-100kph

Claim for the Prado Diesel 1KD-FTV is 12.7 secs 0-100kph.

My own testing estimate based on GPS is 9.4sec 0-100kph.  Although still new its not a slow car by any means.

What are the engines ?

From it initial world wide release in 2003 the following engines have called the Prado Home. These are the claimed engine power.

1GR-FE
V6 Petrol
Quad Cam with VVTi EFI
4 Litre (3956cc)
Claimed 179Kw 5200RPM
Claimed 376Nm 3800RPM (Auto)
Claimed 343Nm 2400-2800RPM (Manual)

1KZ-TE
IL4 Turbo-charged Diesel EFI
Single Cam
3 Litre (2982cc)
Claimed 96Kw 3600RPM
Claimed 343Nm 2000RPM (Auto & Manual)

However overseas models has access to the 'new' direct injection model from introduction of this series.

This engine available in Australia from late 2006.
Claimed 127Kw 3400RPM
Claimed 410Nm 1600-2800RPM
The Lexus GX has access to the V8.

1KD-FTV (2006 models)
IL4 Twin Cam Turbo-charged
Direct Injection - Common Rail
3 Litre (2982cc)
Claimed 122Kw 3400RPM
Claimed 343Nm 1400-2800RPM
(Auto 5 & Manual 6)

2UZ-FE
60 Degree V8
Quad Cam with VVTi EFI
4.7 Litre
Claimed 196Kw 5400
Claimed 437Nm 3400

This engine model appears to be the same as the V8 in the 100 series which claims another set of figures.  The Lexus LX which also has the same engine claims over 200Kw and 450Nm.  Interesting isn't it.

In Australia the claim for same V8 engine in the 100-series is:

170Kw @ 4800RPM
410Nm @ 3400RPM
