Prado Engine History
Last Updated: 27 January 2010

This page now covers the 120 series and the latest 150 series Prado.

Which is the best engine ?

On specs alone the V6 is the choice!  Since the this review is on the V6, I can safely say that it is the petrol version a really good engine.

I can't say much about the diesel as I haven't driven the diesel except as a relief driver.  However based on what heard at the fleet reviews it not exactly state of the art.  Wait for the 2UZ-FE version - much better.

The V8 would be nice but there does not seem to be any real reason for choosing it over the V6 apart from personal preference.

How fast is the 120 series Prado?

150 Series Toyota Land Cruiser LC4 Prado Review - Engine Performance

Claimed top speed for the 5 door Prado is 180kph (Petrol V6)

Claimed top speed for the 5 door Prado is 175kph ( 1KD-FTV Diesel)

Claimed 0-100kph for the 5 door Prado is 9.1seconds (Petrol V6)

Claimed 0-100kph for the 5 door Prado is 11.2-11.6 seconds (1KD-FTV Diesel)

Claim for the Lexus GX V8 is 8.1 sec 0-60mph.
Claim for the Prado GXL V6 is 9.5 secs 0-100kph

My own testing estimate based on GPS is 9.4sec 0-100kph.  Although still new at the time of writing it's not a slow car by any means.

Overseas models have a number of different engine choices and not included here.

Past engine in the Prado include:
(I'm not sure what the engine codes are.)

4 Cyl Twin Cam 16 Valve 2.7 litres Petrol
112Kw @ 4800rpm 240Nm @ 4000rpm

V6 Quad Cam 24 Valve 3.4 litres Petrol
132Kw @ 4800rpm 303Nm @ 3600rpm

This engine model appears to be the same as the V8 in the 100 series which claims another set of figures.  The Lexus LX which also has the same engine claims over 200Kw and 450Nm.  Interesting isn't it.

In Australia the claim for same V8 engine in the 100-series is:

170Kw @ 4800RPM
410Nm @ 3400RPM
